ONE FATHER’S STORY

TODD W. FOLLMER
is chief executive officer of Salt Lake City-based inthinc, the developer of innovative safe-driving products such as the tiwi in-car safety system for teens.

In late 2005, my teen-aged son was driving his car in our California neighborhood. His girlfriend was driving behind him up a winding street less than a mile from our house. In a fraction of a second, her car ran off the road and into a tree; one life was suddenly gone and another was forever changed.

In the process of seeking to comfort our son and others affected, my wife and I were struck by an unfortunate reality: many people we spoke with in our community and beyond had similar stories to tell. The epidemic of teen driving accidents was painfully widespread.

Not long after this terrible event, I was introduced to a company in Salt Lake City, Utah, that designed and sold driving-safety systems for commercial fleets. I eventually accepted a position as the company’s Chief Executive Officer and took on the responsibility with a mission: to apply the commercial driving systems to a product that could effectively improve teen safety behind the wheel of a car. That mission led to the creation of an in-car mentoring device and road-safety system – simply called tiwi™ – that we hope will soon make all young drivers more aware, experienced and, most of all, safe.

Of course, everyone in the nation doesn’t happen to work for a company that’s in the business of safer driving. Yet we all do have the ability to be a part of a bigger solution. That is the very reason for the Teen Driving Council, as well as our company’s commitment to serve as the founding sponsor for this urgent and critical cause.

Many resources and groups have worked diligently to point out the scope and impact of accidents resulting from young drivers. The true difference of the Teen Driving Council will be felt through our focus of aiming parents, teens and all concerned parties down the clearest, safest and smartest routes of prevention.
